    Organism
This seminal film by Adcademy Award-winning film artist Hilary Harris views New York City as if through a giant microscope, to reveal the city as a giant organism. To shoot the film, Harris hung time-lapse cameras off skyscrapers all over Manhattan, and left them running for six months at a time. The result is half a year compressed into 40 minutes. Its spectacular shots - of skyscrapers growing out of parking, avenues of traffic dissolving into pulsating capillaries, and lights flickering on and off like neurons in some vast brain - are unforgettable. Distributed by Phoenix films; New York, 1975.

    Koyaanisqatsi
Godfrey Reggio's stunning 1983 visual poem contrasting the Sacred Land of the Hopi with the urban chaos and confusion of New York and Los Angeles. The title means "life out of balance" in the Hopi language. No actors, no subtitles, all set to music by the American composer Philip Glass. Spectacular and though-provoking. By Godfrey Reggio.

    Powaqqatsi
Another film by Godfrey Reggio, scored by Philip Glass, released in 1988. Shot in Brazil, Peru, Kenya, Egypt, Nepal and Nigeria, this film shows the common humanity of people all around the world, and the problems they face when "development" comes knocking at their door. The Hopi language title means "negative sorcerer who lives at the expense of others" - suggesting that Western civilisation is a parasite for the Third World. Breautiful and sad, leaves one wanting to save the planet. Distributed by Canon Distributors
